Best class for PvE?

I'm currently making a Warrior, but I'm still undecided on whether to become a Merc or SM. My main purpose for this character is for PvE-based play, and maybe a little PvP (I'm not a huge PvPer). I would like something that will clear dungeons quickly and efficiently.

From my understanding, Swordsmen tend to have faster attack skills, however, Mercenaries have much better AoE-damaging capabilities.

I've been looking into PvE videos, and this just made me even more indecisive. I've watched a few videos by desolutionxx on YouTube for his SM and also videos of a Merc with high crit on Larrel24's Channel. I'm gravitating more towards the SM, however, the Merc has exceptional dungeon-clearing abilities. However, my only concern is that Larrel24's Mercenary may simply be an exception due to his high-grade gear and not really representative of what Mercenaries can do in PvE.

Can any other experienced SMs and Mercs shed some light into their PvE capabilities?

Go with what you want, I think Merc is better in all aspects of PvE. But at the end of the day its your time and energy.. Just make sure you enjoy while you play lol.

Well the thing to remember is that most videos you view on YouTube will most likely be highly geared players. This: desolutionxx Is a highly geared player that has probably spent alot of time and money getting his gears to be the best. It is possible to eventually get there, but don't expect it from the starting gate.

Personally I went with SM. I love the sword based skills and the power of the attacks. They tend to be good for soloing dungeons. I have a friend that went mercenary and they do well solo as well and are great for parties.

Like the above post stated, at the end fo the day play what you like. If you prefer sword; swordmaster. Axe or Hammer; Mercenary. Both are fun. Both are strong.

Both are decent in PvE, but Merc has much better mob control. You'll have a harder time with mob control on a SM because their skills naturally scatter mobs. Mercs also have better super-armor breaking capabilities, but SMs definitely rank higher on the DPS scale; particularly on bosses.
